A Weekend in Dunkeld

Billy and I are often looking for little weekend getaways to get out of the city and back into nature. We also love being able to support small businesses and smaller towns where possible, and to shine a light on these wonderful wee spots so you can go visit them too!

Just over an hour drive out of Edinburgh (you can also catch the train), Dunkeld is a quaint but lovely town situated right by the River of Tay. In the last few years new cafes and shops have cropped up in this wee spot and it’s lovely to see it becoming such a popular place to visit.
However, don’t let it’s size fool you! There’s plenty to see and do around Dunkeld to have you recharging your human batteries in no time.

Where to stay:

  • The Atholl Arms is a doggo friendly hotel which overlooks the river and boasts a delightful beer garden with regular live music. Billy has also publicly stated that the pizzas at Atholl Arms are the best he’s ever had. The Atholl Arms is cozy, super welcoming, have a great menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner and the vibes are always wonderful.

  • If you’re looking to spend a little more, head to the Dunkeld House Hotel. Situated on a massive piece of land with fairy gardens, an onsite restaurant and aperols in the sun, it’s definitely a place to kick your heels up and totally unwind.

Where to eat:

  • If you’re looking for a baked good, go no further than the Aran Bakery. Their almond croissants are divine and they make a fab iced latte.

  • Across the street you’ve got The Scottish Deli for a lovely baguette or a plate of meats, cheese and other charcuterie delights. They turn into a tapas bar at night too! But we haven’t had a chance to eat there at night, so let us know what you think!

  • Nova Botanics is a beautifully designed cafe and shop (where we spent many a dollar on beautiful books and candles) but they also make a cracking cup of coffee and have sweet treats on offer too

What to do:

  • Spend the day meandering through the wee shops around Dunkeld, I mentioned Nova Botanics above but there’s quite a few boutique shops, grocers and crafty goods to peruse throughout Dunkeld. Take your time looking through and support small!

  • Take a book to the Cathedral gardens and relax by the water! On a sunny day the river is so beautiful to sit by and watch the world go past

  • If you’re feeling more adventurous, why not try a hike to the Hermitage (an easy walk) the Pine Cone Trail (also an easy walk, but a smidge longer than the Hermitage) or if you’re feeling really game, bag your first Munro at Schiehallion (or go a tad smaller at Ben Chonzie)

I hope we’ve inspired you to spend a weekend in Dunkeld, now it’s on our radar we stop through anytime we’re headed on a big road trip for a coffee and a bite to eat! It’s really lovely to see this town buzzing with people, the energy there is always really lovely and we can’t wait to get back again soon!
