3 Quirky Things to do in Edinburgh
Edinburgh as a city isn’t short on amazing things to do, but if you’re looking for something a little left of centre to do around this magical place, we’ve got just the ticket for you!
We’ll preface this by saying that we’re into the weirder, more wonderful things that Edinburgh has to offer - so this list may not be for everyone! But we always encourage you to try new things and be open to alternative experiences because you don’t know what you like til you try it 😉
So without further adieu, here’s a couple of kooky and strange things you can do around Edinburgh on your next free day!
Wild West Morningside
We bet you didn’t know there’s a literal wild west themed street in the heart of Edinburgh? Only a small wee area, this alleyway is super cool to check out.
The facade was originally built in 1995-96 by a furniture store owner and whilst a bit run down nowadays, it’s worth a stop for a bangin’ IG worthy snap. Gabby had a shoot here as part of a 10 concept photographic series she did in 2021, it’s usually really quiet (with an occasional car popping down)
Beltane Fire Festival
Every year on Calton Hill, the Beltane Fire Society attracts thousands of people to witness the Fire Festival. Beltane celebrates the changing of the seasons. The procession follows the story of the May Queen and Green Man and there’s loads of pockets of dancing, singing, fire (obviously) and all in all is a wild night out in Edinburgh.
Not for everyone, but we really enjoyed visiting in 2022 and can’t wait to go next year! (You can even volunteer to be part of it 😉) Just a wee heads up, you’ll see plenty of nudity at this festival!
Mary Kings Close
Did you know that there are hidden, underground streets in Edinburgh? To be honest, we didn’t realise the extent of them either until we visited this amazing spot on the Royal Mile.
Mary King’s Close is situated smack bang in the middle of the Royal Mile and they run daily tours taking you through the deep dark streets underground in Edinburgh. You’ll learn how residents used to live back in the day, the history of the plague in Edinburgh and some of the more gruesome tales of what went on in Mary King’s Close.
Seasonal tours are also run, including the True Crime tour which is currently on (Oct 22) and is a well researched absolutely fascinating tour to take part of - and don’t worry, there are no jump scares!
This is a sell out attraction so ensure you book yourself tickets to avoid dissapointment!
